Flashback alert! Rumiko Takahashi kicked off the rampage of Ranma 1/2 back in August 1987 as her third big hit after URUSEI YATSURA and Maison Ikkoku. The manga was serialized in Shogakukan’s Weekly Shonen Sunday until 1996—no wonder our brains are fried from all the laughs! VIZ Media swooped in, letting us giggle through Ranma’s wild antics without learning Japanese. Thanks, guys!
But hold your horses! It was previously adapted into two anime series by Studio Deen: Ranma 1/2 and Ranma 1/2 Nettohen, racking up a jaw-dropping 161 episodes from 1989 to 1992. Add in 12 OVAs and three films, and it’s practically its own cinematic universe! And yes, we even had a live-action special in 2011; someone pass the popcorn, this is about to get wild!
