On the 9th of May, the official Discord channel of 2XKO faced a gloomy situation. What commenced as an innocent exchange regarding possible characters escalated into intense debates, specifically centered around the adaptation of Fiddlesticks – a spooky scarecrow figure – to the realm of fighting games. League of Legends boasts a myriad of champions that could potentially migrate to the fighting game domain, yet the obstacle lies in encapsulating their core essence while ensuring they remain captivating to control.
This conundrum has been labeled as the “Fiddlesticks dilemma”. How does one integrate a character from an alternate genre into a fighting game, rendering them compelling to play without sacrificing their original identity? It’s a nuanced tightrope walk that game developers confront when birthing new characters.
This challenge is one that the 2XKO squad has wrestled with previously, especially concerning figures like Ahri whose skill set underwent alterations in the course of development. Designer Alex Jaffe conversed about this balancing act during our interaction at Evo 2023, and the identical queries reemerged during my recent attendance at Evo.
