It’s common knowledge that Overwatch 2 has been grappling with challenges for a considerable period now, and opinions vary on the plight of Blizzard’s once immensely popular hero-shooter IP. The decline started after Overwatch’s initial two-year phase, as the emphasis shifted towards bolstering eSports rather than meeting the needs of players across all proficiency levels. While OW2 has seen some recent triumphs, it remains a mere shadow of its past glory, and the daring take by Marvel and NetEase on the genre might just be the much-needed revitalization that many have yearned for so long.
Concurring with my friend Connor’s view that Marvel Rivals appears as a reimagined form of Overwatch, the emulation era of Overwatch it resembles could prove advantageous, especially given the present state of OW2. Marvel and NetEase seem determined in their pursuit of a segment in the hero-shooter realm, just as several analogous games and ongoing service projects are beginning to wane in popularity. The destiny of these games is uncertain and notoriously difficult to foresee, particularly in the face of the extended development timelines of modern AA and AAA titles, unless you are bestowed with a group of prodigious developers (which, there are a few remarkable instances of).
