Elden Ring is renowned for its cryptic riddles, including peculiar deities, prohibited compacts, and a clandestine agreement between siblings that reshapes the world’s destiny. At the core of these enigmas lies the most prominent figure in the game: Marika. Despite her significance, she is the singular persona you never directly encounter or hear from. It is peculiar that this divine monarch, who enforced her dominion over the realm and founded a novel faith with herself as its centerpiece, remains veiled in secrecy.
Initially, I presumed Marika’s mystery was merely a narrative decision by FromSoftware to leave narrative threads dangling, but upon finishing Shadow of the Erdtree, I came to realize it was intentional. Marika’s absence is meaningful, and I am convinced it holds pivotal importance to Elden Ring’s storyline.
In ancient times, Marika was a formidable combatant and adept enchantress who subjugated The Lands Between, waged war against dragons and age-old colossi, and sought retribution against those who inflicted harm upon her kin. She masterminded the establishment of a fresh social order, with Godfrey as her confederate. Nevertheless, Marika was the prime mover behind these deeds, cementing bonds with divine beings and disrupting long-standing customs.
